First off, yes!, these fabulously 1980s photos are in our collection! (Thank you, Office of Tourism). But we’re not sharing these summery finds just because. We’re sharing them to remind folks that summer is here, and for researchers and historians, that often means time to visit the archives! Every summer, we get a handful of historians here doing research while they are away from school, and these can be some of the most rewarding patrons. We get a chance to dig deeper into our collections, spend longer amounts of time with sometimes obscure records. And it’s not a bad deal for the researchers. While the hot sun is beating down, we always remain temperature and humidity controlled! But each archives is a little different, and for that reason, the American Historical Association has put together this really useful guide, SUMMER TIPS FOR VISITING ARCHIVES. It’s a nice comprehensive look at what to expect from different repositories, rules and restrictions, and how to get the most out of the archives experience. Take a look, share with potential researchers, and remember…no pens in the archives!
